A good Head for Radio- Part Two
Back in September 2006 I posted a digital sketch of Radiohead frontman, Thom Yorke using a Wacom Intuos tablet. Now four years later, I've upgraded to a Wacom Cintiq 21UX (an interactive pen display, for those not tech savvy) and below is another digital sketch of Thom Yorke. Done in Photoshop.

Just the default hard round brush.

Love it Chris. Does the little distance between the pen surface and the actual drawing being done under the glass bother you? I tried it once only at a con and i was rather hard to draw because of that.

Craig- So far I love it. I highly recommend it. There have been people who can't stand it, so if you're considering it maybe test it out somewhere before you commit. And yes it definitely speeds up the workflow.
P.J.- I thought it would bug me, but if you properly calibrate the pen to point distance it's unnoticeable.

Love the sketch Chris! Some guys are interesting enough that there's no need to caricature! I guess that's the point here.
On the Cintiq topic; I also have reservations about the pen/glass distance but maybe just trying one for a few minutes in a convention booth isn't enough? The ones who I hear liking it seem very happy with it.
My other thought is that I think the hand/eye connection doesn't really suffer having the tablet off to side, and I like not having a pen in my field of vision.
Anyway, the debate goes on but it's surely just a personal preference..

Get Your Sketch- I understand people's reservations with the pen/cursor distance problem, but I've never understood the 'pen is in my field of vision' argument. How is it any different from drawing with pencil and paper?
Will Appledorn- I think all of those are possibilities, but I asked myself, would I have drawn the first Thom differently if I had a Cintiq back then, and it was a definite 'yes'. Because of it's control and accuracy it's so much easier to add more refined detail to a drawing with the Cintiq (on the downside it's very tempting to overwork a piece as well)
