300 sketch

This was done for a 300 Drawing Jam over at The Drawing Board.

I started with a pencil sketch which was then scanned into Photoshop. Further detail (mainly white linework over the pencils) was added for more interest. Then using a textured Photoshop brush with reduced opacity, colours were built up. Also tools such as the history brush, dodge, burn (using the same textured brush) and some noise at the end were used for added effect.

Great movie btw.

Strangely, somehow, you continue to improve. Just when I think you're going to level off, you instead push to a new level. This one really meshes your realistic, comic book and caricature styles into one style. You've got to pursue this style more.

Leonidas is looking mighty cool, great work! BTW, the book is better - read the book and enjoy the bits they left out, while circumventing the rubbish they added into the film.

Hi Chris,
Been looking at your blog a couple of times now and thought it was time to post a comment. Your caricatures are really very funny, different to mine as they are more exaggerated. I prefer not to take too much time on mine - I'm a full time mom!
All the best.

Really digging the metalic finish on the helmet. I also think that the "fade effect" (not sure of a proper term for it) that you have going on at the edges of the image really works well.

As Gannon said, this is probably the best blending of your myriad of styles I have seen you do. This is a style that you should push further and really ivestigate because it is really quite bad.ass.

Awesome... so much emotion in this drawing. The Luke one below is absolutely ridiculous and so are all the caricatures! Glad you started posting again :)

Thanks everyone for the enthusiastic response!

Gannon, srh- I'm glad you think this combination of styles works. I'll definitely have to experiment with it a bit more.

garyfields- Thanks! Never done any work for the big three. Self published comics locally a while back, but it's all mainly advertising work these days.

man i am really amazed. Really like the result you got, i understand the process until you start talking about the fucking story pencil.....i use photoshop since looooong time ago and i really do not know how to use that damn tool..

faboun'e- Thankyou. just comes with practise I guess...also don't be afraid to experiment, especially with digital art, it's more forgiving.

cereal killer- Thanks, mate! The history brush, wasn't a pivotal tool in achieving the look to my drawing. It was just a case of Photoshop having hundreds of ways to do the same thing. I used the history brush to help with the 'fade out' effect around the drawing. The same can be done by just making a duplicate layer, and erasing from one to reveal the other layer underneath.

man that one is funny.
What a film ey? I was laughing all through there. Some serious shouting going on and heavy heavy monster splatters. I think Brian Blessed was called in as technical advisor to ensure the shouting was just right.

Yeah it's a travesty Brian Blessed wasn't given a cameo.

Whenever Leonidas yelled, all I could think of was Mr. Blessed in Blackadder screaming for "Blood, blood, BLOOD!" :D

You put emotion and spirit into your drawings better than anyone else I have seen. The technique is great but the spirit and emotion oozing from your art is what separates you from most. Do you use a Wacom table and if so what program have you found that utilizes it the best? I am a wannabe caricature artist who is trying to learn how to use the computer to render my art and I haven't found the right combination yet. Do you have any video tutorials?
